Subject: Seeking Nautical Chart of Kosrae Island

A professor from the Florida Museum of Natural History is writing a book on
the Biogeography of Oceania. His graphics will include redrawings of
topographic maps of the islands using published and referenced maps. The
University of Florida Map & Imagery Library has the U.S. Geological Survey
maps, special topic maps and the more general nautical chart. What the
professor needs is a nautical chart which we did not receive as part of the
GPO Depository shipment to Regional Depository Libraries. It is for Kosrae
Island which was once known as Kusaie that is now part of the Federated
States of Micronesia.

* The chart is #81488, Kosrae Island (Caroline Islands)1:72,253. Plans A.
Coquille Harbor; B. Port Lottin; C. Lele Harbor. It is listed for sale in
the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency latest catalog (1996).

I could not find the chart listed in OCLC or Eureka. Does any Library have
this chart available that they could send on InterLibrary Loan or would make
a full-size copy or scan of it? The chart may be based on a French or
British Chart that would also be useful. While the map was listed as
available for purchase in 1996, our experience has been that it is very slow
trying to buy foreign nautical charts from NOS.

Hopefully a Library has acquired the Pacific Islands for a research
collection and would be willing to help. It would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, the Florida Museum of Natural History is the largest Natural
History Museum south of the Smithsonian. Their researchers and curators
conduct extensive research in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania as
well as Florida. It is always fun to see someone on NOVA or nature
programs, whom you have helped in the Library.

Thank you Helen
