The Oryx Press, a Phoenix-based publisher of reference books for high
school, public, college, and special libraries, is looking for one author
(or a small team) to write a reference guide to geography/GIS resources.
The candidate will receive a modest advance as well as royalties, and the
copyright will be in his or her name. The proposal process usually takes
about 3 months, and the writing time for reference books (100,000-200,000
words) from 1 1/2 to 2 years.

The ideal candidate is probably a librarian or at least thoroughly
understands library reference materials and how they're used; knows the
field, its recent developments, and where it's heading; has time now to
develop the proposal; is responsible; can meet deadlines; has the time to
write the book; has previous experience writing books or articles; and is
able to write for a nonspecialist audience.

The proposed book is not an annotated bibliography per se but will bear
some resemblance to such a book. Better models are Oryx's BUSINESS
INFORMATION: HOW TO FIND IT, HOW TO USE IT, by Michael Lavin, and USING
GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SOURCES, by Jean Sears and Marilyn Moody, both of
which have a lot more text.

Interested candidates (individuals or teams) should send a brief letter and
a vitae/resume (preferably via email) to:
