The latest edition to Coordinates (Series A, no. 7) is John Hessler,
"How to Map a Sandwich: Surfaces, Topological Existence Theorems and the
Changing Nature of Modern Thematic Cartography, 1966-1972."

This article deals with the mathematical underpinnings of GIS. It
should be of particular interest to those interested in the historical
origins of GIS, or in the relationship between cartography and mathematics.

Coordinates (http://www.sunysb.edu/libmap/coordinates.htm) is the online
journal of the Map and Geography Round Table of the American Library
Association.
