New York, 23 October 2012. Art Media Agency (AMA).

A collection of 240 photographs owned by National Geographic Society, ranging from late 19th century to nowadays is to be put on sale at Christie’s New York on 6 December. This is the first time the National Geographic Society puts a part of its collection on sale. Estimated turnover is $3,000,000. The sale comprises masterpieces, such as the iconic photograph of a young Afghan girl during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (valued between $8,000 and $12,000); a portrait of Admiral Robert Peary during his expedition to the North Pole in 1908; a roaring lion in South Arica, or that of an Aborigine in Papua New Guinea.

Proceeds from the Dec. 6 auction, just weeks before National Geographic’s 125th anniversary, will go for the promotion and preservation of the archive and “the nurturing of young photographers, artists and explorers … who are the future of the organization,” Mulvihill said.
