May sound silly, for 18th c. names, for individual states, they may still show
up as small towns of zero pop., often listed in the Rand McNally commercial
atlas. It often is a source for names that do not appear anywhere else. If you
have a particular name, and an idea of where the place might be, we can eyeball
some of our 18th century maps and try to come up with your site. Alice Hudson,

Elizabeth:

I would suggest accessing G.A. Thompson's "The Geographical and
Historical Dictionary of America and the West Indies..." first
published in 1814. I have a reprint edition consisting of five
volumes and published by Burt Franklin, NY, NY in 1970.
Unfortunately, it is not available on the web AFAIK.

Best,
Paul Schopp
