That is a very interesting question. If nothing else
surfaces on this list, I'd look into some of those old USGS
reports of original surveys of the west. Also, railroad
survey maps of the west might show those old trails.
Locally, in San Diego County, I have been told by County
park rangers that portions of the Pacific Crest Trail were
once stagecoach routes. Look on the USGS MORENA RESERVOIR
7.5' quad, for example. This is a very popular segment of
the Pacifc Crest Trail. Up until a month ago when I sold my
old house out there, I would walk my Border Collie and
Golden Retriever on this trail every weekend. There is a
foundation of an old building still standing which I was
told was once a stagecoach station house; but that is only
local folklore and I've never confirmed this. I think the
only true stories about this lake are that this is where
Charles Hatfield (rainmaker) started the Great Flood of
1915(?) and comedians Laurel & Hardy did some serious bass
          fishing.
