Julie mentions that some had become brittle. I have found that on the
pre-1960 ones at least, long term exposure to light is the culprit. I
found some still in the original box and packing material. These were
like new. Ones left on the top of a cabinet before I rescued them were
brittle. Alas, Mount Fuji did not fare well at all.

Hi Robert,
I weeded a number of raised relief maps a number of years ago. I did so
for a couple of reasons. First, I was completely out of space in the
map
room. We were over 100% capacity with maps being stacked on the tops of
cases. The r.r. maps were rarely, if ever, used and so they were an
obvious candidate given how much space they took up. We kept ones that
were of the local area or seemed to be of particular interest. We did
discard a few that were very brittle and were cracking. The rest we
were
able to send to other libraries that wanted to take them. Of the ones
we
retained, there has been no use.
