Hello, Wangyal.

My own inclination has been to use the form of coordinates displayed on the map. Most of my experience has been with printed maps, where I have seen them given more as degrees, minutes, seconds. In digital maps is where decimal coordinates are rendered.

I have cataloged some physical digital forms, such as CD or DVD. I have not had much experience with web- or viewer-based mapping, where decimal coordinates are probably more common.

As to your second question: If you are cataloging using OCLC, verification of a record requires both the 034 and the 255 field to appear. Yes, there is some redundancy, but each allows additional information. Subfield b allows for a projection statement, including standard parallels. 034 allows for different systems besides the horizontal measurements of the typical map and its coordinates.

How many of you are using decimal degrees as coordinates instead of degrees, minutes, and seconds? We are migrating our map cataloging records from a locally designed database to MARC format cataloging. I am planning to convert all records with degrees, minutes, and seconds to decimal degrees. Is it necessary to have both 034 and 255 fields in the cataloging record?

Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Wangyal
