Thank you to those who responded to my request for help
dealing with the NOTIS system-imposed item record limit.
After reading the comments of Mark Thomas and Debbie
Lords, I decided to make a second bibliographic record
for the same title, and split the body of map sheets
into two holdings statements that NOTIS can handle.

If this turns out to have been a really stupid decision,
for some reason I hadn't realised, I promise to let you
all know.

I think that this, and the 500 circulating item limit, are
big problems, that all of us using NOTIS must face. Are
many of us avoiding the problems by barcoding only on the
fly, or not circulating? This would be to deny two of NOTIS'
advantages.

To those not using NOTIS I apologise for what must seem an
arcane an jargon-ridden topic.
