I recently read that book.  It does have some good cartographic
historical information.  I made it all the way through, but it's kind
of a tough read.  Not my writing style I guess.  It does get a
little better in the last half of the book - or I got used to it.

It's kind of funny how obsessive the author becomes with the
main character (and villain).
