Carlos:

Did you ever get any feedback to your message on Maps-L? I am a
member of the Bibliographic Control Committee of the Association of
Canadian Map Libraries and Archives so I thought I would pass on some
general observations that might explain the lack of cataloguing copy
for individual topographic maps and nautical charts.

I was not surprised to hear that you have not had much luck finding
cataloguing copy for the materials you mentioned. Map cataloguing
activities are not as well developed in Canadian map libraries for a
number of reasons (although we are making progress). Most major
university map collections are now cataloguing their map collections
although some have only recently started. Many of us contribute to
OCLC and as of last year, map records are now being loaded into
AMICUS, the union catalogue maintained by the National Library of
Canada. As of a few months ago, there were 60,000 map records in
AMICUS from 15 Canadian map collections. Our committee is working with
the National Library to expand the number of reporting libraries and
number of records. AMICUS however, can only be searched through
subscription (the AMICUS search service is fairly reasonably priced
-around $35 per hour).

However, I would be very surprised to see individual topographic
maps or individual nautical charts catalogued. Most of us are just
cataloguing at the series level rather than the individual sheet level
as we focus on just trying to get basic catalogue access to what we
have in the collection. Most libraries I believe are giving priority
for cataloguing to their local areas but you would have to check with
UBC, Simon Fraser and U. of Victoria to see if they have done any
sheet-level cataloguing. The National Archives of Canada which is
responsible for collecting and preserving Canadian cartographic
materials is doing some sheet-level description but they have a very
small cataloguing staff and may not have completed the areas you are
looking for. National Archives cataloguing records have been loaded
into AMICUS.

I should also mention that cataloguing records for Canadian maps are
also starting to appear in the National Library's Canadiana CD-ROM. At
this time, the Canadiana CD-ROM only contains the map cataloguing
records of the National Archives but we hope that this new product can
be expanded to include the Canadian maps of other libraries.

Information about AMICUS and the Canadiana CD-ROM can be obtained from
the National Library's web site: http://www.nlc-bnc.ca

Sorry for the long answer to a simple question.

Regards
Grace Welch
