With all the anecdotal accounts given about maps received with musty
odors, this subject looks like a good article/book/thesis to investigate,
research and write. There appears to be a hole in the literature about
contamination of materials, and it needs to be plugged. Someone who needs a
subject for thesis, or needs to publish in the library literature, should
work on this problem. Also, it appears to be yet another item in which
librarians re-invent the wheel at each library, rather than sharing their
expertise.

Several years ago, I did some research on this because I handle books from
South Asia and was also concerned about pesticide residue. This is the only
NIOSH report I found, but it only covers books.
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/hhe/reports/pdfs/1994-0104-2458.pdf

I also found some questions on Conservation OnLine
(http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/), but no answers.

I hope this helps.

Hi.

I was wondering if anyone is taking special precautions with the maps that
they receive through the Library of Congress Cooperative Acquisitions
Program, especially those maps of India and Pakistan.

The items always feel dirty and dusty when we unpack them .... and the
central acquisitions unit here is starting to raise alarms about residues
left by fumigation on materials acquired from some parts of Asia.

Does anyone know why these maps feel the way that they do? What might be on
them?

Thanks!
