For those of you who may be in the Boston/Cambridge area in the next month you
may be interested in the following exhibit: From An Art To A Science
Navigation in an Age of Exploration and Discovery. It will open today and be
available until the 24th of Novemb. The exhibit includes materials from the
Harvard Collection of Scientific Instruments, the Houghton Library, and the
Harvard Map Collection. Scheduled to coincide with The Longitude Symposium here
at Harvard the exhibit features two of Mercator's globes (1541 and 1551) from
the Harvard Map Collection, a portulan atlas, the first printed portulan sea
chart, several works on navigation including those of John Harrison, and
numerous scientific instruments.
