The Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information Committee has scheduled a
full slate of meeting for the ALA annual conference. There are several
proposals and discussion papers that may be of interest to the
cartographic community.

On Saturday, the following proposals and papers will be examined:

Proposal no. 2008-06 suggests a mechanism for indicating which issues of
a multi-part item are part of a series title. It would add a subfield 3
to the 490 and 8xx fields where the volume or sheet information would be
recorded.

If Proposal no. 2008-07 is passed, the 440 field will be made obsolete.
A traced series would be entered in the 490 field as it appears on the
piece and in the 830 field in the established form, even if the two
forms are the same.

Proposal 2008-10 comes from the National Library of Finland and seeks to
add a subfield for Other standard number in field 534 (Original version
note).

Discussion paper 2008-DP06 explores ways to code for deposit programs as
methods of acquisition in field 008/07 of the holdings format.

Sunday's meeting plans on tackling some of the changes stemming from
RDA. Monday's meeting will continue any discussions not concluded on
Saturday or Sunday.

Proposal 2008-05 is the proposal for all the changes identified at this
time for RDA. Given the complexity, the proposal has been broken down
into subproposals. A similar tack has been prepared for Discussion Paper
2008-DP05.

Proposal 2008-05/01 serves as the introduction to the proposals. 05/02
proposes defining a new field in the bibliographic and authority formats
to identify if the record is for a work or an expression. 05/03 would
define a field or fields (depending on which option passes) to designate
content type, media type, and carrier type.

Discussion Paper 2008-DP05/3 relates to Proposal 2008-05/03 in that it
covers the treatment of the controlled list of terms to be used for
content, media and carrier.

Discussion Paper 2008-DP05/1 covers the use of RDA relators between
names and resources. Discussion Paper 2008-DP05/2 looks at adding a slew
of data elements to the authority format.

Interestingly, Discussion Paper 2008-DP05/4 covers things that require
no changes the the MARC21 formats.
