Subject: IFLA Bangkok -- 1999

The 65th Council and General Conference of the International
Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) will be
held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC),
Sunday, August 22 to Saturday, August 28, 1999. Early registration of
$350 is due by March 15, 1999. After March 15, it will be $425.
Accomodations at some of the top hotels in the world range from only
$100 a night down to an average of only $45 to $50 a night. Bargain
airfares to Asia may be found through your local travel agent or by
contacting Thai Airways in Los Angeles at (800) 426-5204. The largest
mall in Asia, Seacon Square (http://asiatravel.com/seaconsquare), is
located near BITEC and convention hotels. It has a total area of
500,000 sq. meters or equivalent to 96 football fields, 100 escalators
and elevators, a 7,000 car park, and stores ranging from large
department stores to small fast food shops.

The Geography and Map Libraries Section of IFLA has a full program
planned for Bangkok. Inaddition to all the wonderful receptions
during the week and the full-day Saturday field trips, which are
covered by the registration fee, the G&M Section is planning a paper
session on Monday, visits to local map collections and publishers and
a one-day field trip down the Malay Peninsula on Tuesday and
Wednesday, and a full-day GIS and Libraries Workshop on Thursday. Two
post conference tours of the ancient capitals of Thailand and the
Bridge on the River Kwai area can be arranged for $849 and $589 each,
which includes transportation, meals, and lodging (Sunday, August 29
to Sunday, September 5). For those with more time, a Globus Tour of
Northern Thailand, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Singapore, Bali, and Hong
Kong can be arranged (Sunday, September 5 to Tuesday, September 21)
for $3,324 that includes airfare to the IFLA meeting, or $1,889 for
land only with your own air arrangements. Please contact me if you
would like more information on any of these tours.

If you would like copies of the registration forms, please send me
your fax number. Registration can be faxed into the local organizers
in Bangkok and paid by major credit card.

It is not too late to make a proposal for a paper, if that would help
your attendance. Additional paper sessions can be added on other days
if the there is a demand and a proposal is made by March 31.

Future meetings will be in Jerusalem in 2000, Boston in 2001, Glasgow
in 2002, and Berlin in 2003, so this will be your last chance to visit
Asia, in the near future, and attend an IFLA conference. This is the
year for asian travel!!
