You might want to reconsider the suggestion of the 1950 King Solomon's
Mines as the movie title you were seeking. It is one of my favorite
mid-20th Century movies because of the actors, setting and of course the
use of the map to find treasure. It recently played here on cable TV.
The main factors that make me doubt it is the movie you are describing;
are the fact it is in color, CinemaScope and the map is used
predominately as the guide find the husband of D. Carr who had
disappeared seeking all the jewels in the Mine. There was an earlier
version in the 1930's which I have not seen. It would have been in
black and white. Perhaps the plot involving the map was changed for the
"big screen" version.

From the dim recesses of my mind, I think there was an English movie in
the 1950's involving a surveyor/map maker in Africa or India. I believe
it was mentioned in regards to the movie "Englishman who went up a
Hill". Many of the British movies of this time period were in bk & wh.

Did you search the MAPS-L archives? For several years we discussed
books and movies that had maps as keystones. I hope you will share the
movie's name when you finally get an answer.

I believe you are preferring to King Solomon's Mines...see Wikipedia

Let me know if this is right?

We were talking recently in my library about movies with maps as
the plot centerpiece, and I remember seeing an old B&W movie concerning
the murder of a cartographer in Africa, made in the 1950s or so. The
cartographer had noted the river, used as a national border, had changed
its course. The results were that a lucrative mine had been transferred
from one country to another, and to prevent anyone from knowing that,
the mine owner killed the map maker.
Is anyone on the list familiar with this film, and can give me a
title?
