A new publication from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago

European Cartographers and the Ottoman World 1500-1750: Maps from the
Collection of O. J. Sopranos

By Ian Manners with a contribution by M. Pinar Emiralioglu
Chicago, 2008

140 pp., 7 B&W, 51 full color illustrations, paperbound (11.5 x 9 in); $42

This lavishly illustrated catalogue of the exhibit "European
Cartographers and the Ottoman World 1500-1750" presented at the Oriental
Institute Museum explores how map makers sought to document a new
geography of the Near East that reconciled classical ideas and theories
with the information collected and brought back by travelers and
voyagers. The text is accompanied by images of portolans and atlases,
the earliest printed maps of the Ottoman Empire, and bird's eyes view of
cities that provided "arm-chair" travelers with the experience of
knowing distant places.

Ian Manners is Professor of Geography and Middle Eastern Studies at the
University of Texas, Austin. M. Pinar Emiralioglu is visiting Assistant
Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh.
