1. NEWS

1.1 GIS Behind Bars

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice provides mapping and GIS data
conversion services to state and local government agencies there. "GIS
Goes Behind Bars," an undated article by freelance writer Vicki Speed,
(available via the Intergraph homepage at www.intergraph.com) says inmates
at the Ferguson facility, Midway, TX, are trained in using a variety of
equipment and software packages. The article quotes Ferguson plant manager
Marilyn Beckman as saying this is a way for the Texas Correctional Industry
program to give something back to the state, while at the same time
providing inmates with a technical skill.

She also writes that prison officials see the potential of the facility
becoming a map repository which agencies could contact for information on a
particular area.

TDJC and Intergraph are supporting the project.

1.2 Road Maps

There is a collectors' organization devoted to road maps called the
Road Map Collectors of America (RMCA).

The RMCA is a non-profit, educational organization of about 200 collectors
throughout North America. They publish a quarterly newsletter and maintain
a mailing list to facilitate meeting and trading among members with similar
interests. They have a site at "http://falcon.cc.ukans.edu/~dschul/rmca/
rmca.html," which provides a listing of sources for maps, a history of the
hobby, and other general information related to road maps. There is also
an internet mailing list, ROADMAPS-L, devoted to road map research and
collecting, to which anyone may subscribe by sending the message SUBSCRIBE

The mailing address for RMCA is:

1.3 Revision for the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Metadata

Julie Binder Maitra of the National Mapping Division, USGS wrote a
proposal for revising the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Metadata. The
file is available through Anonymous FTP at " http:\\www.fgdc.gov/pub/
metadata/proposl.txt.

1.4 FYI

1.4.1 Area 51 topo maps

If your patrons want to look at maps of 'Area 51' that remote stretch of
Nevada where the Government is supposed to be housing crashed UFO remains,
etc., etc., dig out these two maps to impress them:

Cactus Flat, Nevada 1:100,000 satellite image map (1984). This neat-o
sheet shows an impressive installation out there in the desert--and that was
10 years ago.

Contrast that with this map: Cactus Flat 1:100,000 metric topo sheet
(1988), which shows only a modest landing strip and tower in that location.

1.4.2 OMNIMAP

Omnimap has a complete listing of USGS topos on our web site at
"http://www.omnimap.com." The listing is organized by state and each state
lists the topos within the state and the border sheets as well. The list
includes ISBN #; USGS file #; sheet name; sheet publication date; scale.
This list was accurate as of January 1, 1996, and was compiled from USGS data.
This listing is also available on floppy.

1.4.3 MAPublisher listserv

Avenza Software Marketing Inc. would like to announce the initiation of
a listserv for MAPublisher users. You can subscribe to the MAPublisher-L
list by sending email to:

      [log in to unmask]

with no subject and only one line that looks like:

        "subscribe MAPublisher-L your_email_address"

        Substitute your email address appropriately.

MAPublisher-L is not a closed list, it is open to existing users and
anyone who wants to know more about MAPublisher.

1.4.4 Cartographic Users Advisory Council Minutes
Thursday May 9, 1996 Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division

As the minutes are somewhat long, I will post them to the WAML listserv
as a separate message.

2.2 OTHER NEW MATERIALS

2.2.1 JAPAN GIS/MAPPING SCIENCES RESOURCE GUIDE by Stephan Pollard

The Japan GIS/Mapping Sciences Resource Guide, available at "http://www
.cast .uark.edu/jpgis/," is the first comprehensive reference source for
Japanese GIS and mapping and provides a framework for future development. The
resource guide is designed to serve as an introduction to the intriguing,
extensive, and varied world of Japan's GIS, map and geospatial data products,
activities and information sources. It serves primarily to help English-
speaking engineers, geographers, cartographers, geologists, production
managers, computer and data processing professionals, and marketing
and sales executives working in Japan or dealing with their Japanese
counterparts in the West. Its objective is to provide information about the
many types of maps available from government map publishing agencies
particularly those published under national mapping standards and
that are highly useful as base maps (e.g., topographic maps). In
regard to Japan-related digital geospatial data the author hopes to
provide as long a list as can be reasonably obtained. Additions,
corrections, and comments are welcome.
