Dear Maps-L Associates,

We have a patron with the following inquiry. Any assistance
appreciated. Please reply directly to the patron, as below.

Many thanks,

Brian

I am looking for a list of map symbols related to Parks & Recreation.
I
have scoured the internet and struck out talking with WA's
professional
association and so once again I turn to you and your esteemed
colleagues on
the list serves for direction. As far as I can tell, the Recreation
and
Parks Professional Association does not have standard symbology.

The Minnesota DNR has a wonderful ArcView extension of Recreation
Symbols in True Type Font available at

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/tools/arcview/extensions/RecSym/recsym.html

Unfortunately, it does not work on the Unix platform. Does
anyone
know if these symbols are available as graphics? Does anyone know
if
there is a list stating which keys relate to which symbol?
I have yet to find standard symbols for hiking trails, bicycle
paths,
etc. It was suggested I try the USGS Topo symbols

http://mac.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/booklets/symbols/moreinformation.html

but this doesn't help. Any ideas?
Finally, I have yet to find a standard classification system for
park
categories (regional, neighborhood, community, open space, etc).
Of
course, in the Planning profession, we have a standard land-use
classification system (which I also can't put my finger on). Is
there
    not one for P&R?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
