GIS/Map Librarian Position

The East View Cartographic (EVC) Map Library is a unique private
commercial collection of topographic, geological and nautical maps and
charts, special atlases, cartographic texts, satellite imagery and GIS
datasets specializing in Russian, American and local/national products
encompassing the globe.  The Map Library supports the business in its
mission to deliver top-quality geospatial data products in all formats
using state-of-the art technologies to meet the needs of EVC’s global
clientele.

The Map Librarian will work closely with the diverse blend of
specialists that make up the EVC team to bring a new level of
organization, accuracy and access to the collection.  The collection is
made up of more than 100,000 paper maps, plus tens of thousands of data
files on CD-ROM and on the network attached storage (NAS) system.

Qualifications

Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree; may be substituted with significant map library
experience
Basic GIS knowledge and familiarity with ArcView and MapInfo software,
understanding of various GIS and raster formats and ISO and FGDC
metadata standards Demonstrated computer expertise
Fluency in at least one foreign language
Ability to read Cyrillic
Cataloging experience & proficiency in map cataloging practices
Working knowledge of government publications
Expertise in using Internet resources, especially for digital spatial
data collection development
Ability to take initiative in a challenging and rapidly changing
environment
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written)
Flexibility and ability to work as part of a team
Superioir organizational skills

Duties

Collection development for cartographic material in all formats
Developing and managing a plan to provide bibliographic access through
the library's online catalog to a collection that is currently largely
uncataloged
Plan and implement new directions for services in GIS
Collaborates with directors of all functional areas: Operations,
Marketing and Geospatial Data Production
Responsible for pulling and filing maps and atlases in all formats, hard
and soft copy
Collaborates with other staff to implement and support local area
networks, internet applications and geographic information systems (GIS)
software
Participates in selection of print and electronic cartographic
information resources
Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as
required
Creates and reviews metadata for digital geospatial data
Participates in planning, design, and maintenance of the East View
Cartographic web site (www.cartographic.com)
