In the process of compiling a grant proposal we are considering the
restoration of several wall maps. For those whom may have also completed such
a project (and/or for those who use wall maps in their research!) I am
interested in your opinions regarding the sectioning of wall maps. As you are
all aware, these nineteenth-century wall maps are composed of usually 4-6
separate sheets. In the process of cleaning, deacidifying, etc. these sheets
are separated. Is it necessary to glue them back together or can successful
research be completed when they are in their original sheet format? We are
obviously not interested in "recreating the financial value" of these maps but
in identifying the preferreformat and access to them for the futu. Any
opinions would be greatly appreciated.
