Subject: RE: MAPS-L: Calcutta question

Dear Lise,

As I have this (Friday) morning returned to work, from a vacation week
in Italy, there may be one thing only to be offered from here -
information re your request for "pilot guide for Calcutta harbor, or
more specifically Kidderpore."

Although I cannot lay my hands on any edition of the 'Bay of Bengal
pilot' within your specified date parameter, but the 8th ed. (1953)
only, it is possible to Xerox the relevant pages from this and to
airmail them you. If other libraries have a more relevant edition of
this pilot (no. 21 of the Admiralty's pilot series), doubtless it would
be helpful to know which they were and their dates:-

5th ed. (1921) ; 6th ed. (1931) ; and 7th ed. (1940)

As regards the Admiralty chart (no. 136 as Ed Redmond correctly
informs), we hold, and I have immediate access to, the following (I cite
the titles as they change; this may enable other US libraries to
identify the chart by a title search):-

1) 'India. Bay of Bengal. River Hugli. Sagar Point to Calcutta',
scale 1:80 730: 'Large Corrections' edition of October 1906 (but with
several small corrections to 1922)

2) 'India. Bay of Bengal. River Hooghly. Sagar Point to Calcutta',
scale 1:80 870: 'Large Corrections' edition of 22 Sept. 1924.

3) [ditto]: 'New Edition' of 19 Feb. 1937

4) 'India. Bay of Bengal. River Hooghly. Sagar Roads to Calcutta',
"From surveys by the officers of the River Survey Department to 1948',
scale 1:81 000

Sincerely
(Mr) Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps, RGS-IBG)

Lise:

Your patron's area of interest appears to be covered on Admiralty Chart
136. We hold multiple editions of this chart published between 1906 and
1997.

Additionally, we hold several plans of Calcutta Harbor (circa 1936)
issued by the "Commissioners for the Port of Calcutta" that may also
include your area of interest.

Feel free to have your patron contact us directly
   ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/askalib/ask-geogmap2.html ) if we can offer
assistance.

Lise,

In a pinch, your patron might nevertheless utilize a chart of more
recent origin (e.g. the Defense Mapping Agency/NIMA/etc.'s International
Nautical Chart series, e.g. Chart #63323 Hiraganj Point to Calcutta
1:20,000), as the vast Kidderpore Docks area between Garden Reach and
Calcutta proper (including King George's Dock) has not substantially
changed since it was built up earlier in the 20th century. Despite
renovation after WWII damage, more advanced harbor facilities have been
subsequently developed down the Hooghly at Diamond Harbour and Haldia,
to serve the region.

There is a handy reference work, 'The Port of Calcutta, A Short
History' by Nilmani Mukherjee, 1968. Included is a pleasantly detailed
Plan of Calcutta Port, from Garden Reach to Howrah Bridge, but it lacks
depth readings and any other navigational information.

For older charts, hopefully Francis Herbert at the RGS can come to the
rescue with a Raj Era item.

Good luck,

Brian

Hi there,
Wondering if ANYONE can help me with this difficult patron request.
Looking for an admiralty chart or pilot guide for Calutta harbor,or
more specifically Kiddepore. The item must be dated from WWI to 1950.
Any suggestions?
many thanks!
