TEXT/PLAIN (67 lines)
A year or so ago the following pages were added to the 'Map History'
gateway site:-

A. Images of early maps on the web <
http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/webimages.html >

B. Web articles and commentaries on special topics in the History of
Cartography < http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/webtexts.html >.

Each can now fairly be described as the only comprehensive listing of
that material on the web. Each lists several hundred links (in the
case of Images, with commentary) and is updated monthly. A few people
send me details of new links and I do, of course, regularly check the
new links on Oddens' Bookmarks. Besides that, it is left to me to try
to find the links myself.

Although this is primarily a MapHist issue, a number of Maps-L
subscribers are likely to be involved with earlier materials as well.
I would therefore like to ask your support, in the following ways:-

1. To confirm that anything in which you have been involved, or know
about personally, has been included and is correct. If not, please
send me the details.

2. To let me know if you experience delays or problems accessing these
pages, which have now grown to about 30KB in size [equivalent to over
20 pages when printed out]. The alternative would be to break each
down into several smaller units, but - given that no organisational
system can be entirely predictable - it seems to me that there are
advantages in offering a single, searchable page.

3. Any thoughts you might have that might lead to the improvement of
those two pages.

It goes without saying that, if you have your own website, I would be
most grateful if you added links to these pages. Given that Google,
especially, prioritises hits in terms of the number of other sites
pointing to it, I need to increase the traffic to those pages. Despite
my efforts to post details to the search engines and directories, and
despite the fact that almost 900 sites point to 'Map History' as a
whole, it is taking time to gain links for the Articles and Images
pages.

If you are interested in some of the broader issues relating to the
mounting of maps on the web - and my contention that much of this
activity is of limited value - please see the 'About' page <
http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/maps/aboutim.html > that accompanies the Images
page, and especially its final two sections: 'A plea to map image
hosts' and 'The future? - issues and suggestions'.

Please reply to me personally.

Thank you.
