Zoomify is free, and pretty impressive.

I'm hoping that my fellow maps-l subscribers will be able to help me
answer some questions about putting a digital collection online.

I am in the process of building a digital collection that I will be
putting online. The maps are historical maps, mostly from the 20th
century but some are from the 19th century. So, I don't think that the
maps need to be georeferenced, just made available for viewing.

I will be scanning the maps as tiff images so I can convert them into
any format that I need. I am considering making them jpeg2000 images so
that users can zoom in on the particular area of the map that they want
with ease. This is a lot better than having just a giant jpeg image.

The issue that I am having is how to serve them online. I'm looking for
an open source solution that will allow me to put the collection online
and serve them without the user having to download the entire image
first. Does anyone know of any solution that will allow me to do this?

I have seen commercial solutions (contentDM for one) but they are VERY
expensive. Someone somewhere has to have found a solution to this and
I'm hoping that they read maps-l and can help me out.

Thanks,
