Subject: Requesting book reviewers for the following three books

Hi all-

I’m the Review Editor for the “Atlas and Book Review” section of the WAML Information Bulletin . I’m seeking reviewers for the following three books (descriptions for these books are taken ESRI Press – for the first book - and Amazon for the other two):

Mapping Time: Illustrated by Minard's Map of Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812, by Menno-Jan Kraak, 2014, 978-1589483125

Mapping Time: Illustrated by Minard's Map of Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812 considers the cartographic challenge of visualizing time on a map. Inspired by graphic innovator Charles Minard’s classic map of France’s disastrous invasion of Russia, this book combines historical and geographic analysis with cartographic visualizations of mapping change over time. It includes more than 100 full-color illustrations.

Mapping It Out: An Alternative Atlas of Contemporary Cartographies, by Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2014, 978-0500239186

Maps have always been at the heart of human knowledge. Whether they chart a newly discovered land or lay out a complicated process, maps serve to improve our understanding of what surrounds us. Maps make the complex simple, and reveal the complexity behind the apparently simple. Mapping It Out invites artists, architects, writers, and designers, geographers, mathematicians, computer pioneers, scientists, and others from a host of fields to create a personal map of their own, in whatever form and showing whatever terrain they choose, whether real-world or imaginary.

Over 130 contributors’ ideas are represented, including Yoko Ono, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, David Adjaye, Ed Ruscha, Alexander Kluge, and many more. Some contributors have translated scientific data into simplified visual language, while others have condensed vast social, political, or natural forms into concise diagrams. There are reworked existing maps, alternate views of reality, charted imaginary flights of fancy, and the occasional rejection of a traditional map altogether

GIS Cartography: A Guide to Effective Map Design, Second Edition, by Gretchen N. Peterson, 2014, 978-1482220674 (ebook - I will send reviewer login information and unique code to access book)

The second edition of a bestseller, this book focuses on map design theory and technique rather than map design tools. It highlights new tools and their capabilities through visual demonstrations and explanations of new techniques such as hexagonal binning, big data point density maps, scale dependent design considerations, 3D building modeling, and so on. The new edition has a much heavier focus on digital cartography and its best practices. It has also been redesigned so that it can be used as a textbook with study questions and an end-of-chapter exercise.

The deadline for these reviews would be in about 7 weeks (I will send you more specifics if wind up reviewing one of these books). Please contact me off-list if you’re interested and I’ll send you the book, the reviewer guidelines, and a due date.

Thanks,

Ilene
