Geographic Information Systems Librarian University of North Texas Libraries

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian will lead the UNT
Libraries' efforts to develop and implement innovative, multidisciplinary
geospatial data services, programs, and collections. This new service will
enhance curricula and research innovation across the University relating to
spatial data and visual analysis.  We are seeking an individual who is
entrepreneurial and forward-thinking to fill this new position.  The GIS
Librarian will collaborate with faculty, subject librarians and library IT
personnel to:



*         Assess the needs of the GIS user community,

*         Develop and implement a plan for services required to meet
community needs,

*         Provide instruction and research assistance in the use of
geospatial information, and

*         Interact regularly with students, faculty, and the extended North
Texas GIS community.

*         The GIS Librarian exercises broad independent judgment and
authority under the general direction of the Eagle Commons Library
Department Head.



SPECIFIC POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES



*         Develop a robust GIS Program based on analysis of community needs.



*         Develop and implement an educational program to increase awareness
in the extended UNT community of the value of geospatial maps to
non-profits, businesses, and researchers.



*         Market and promote the GIS Program by collaborating with campus
partners to expand GIS services.



*         Develop and maintain an online presence for describing the GIS
program services that may include the development of subject specific
LibGuides, tutorials, and class specific pages.



*         Build on UNT Libraries strength in instruction and classroom
engagement to promote curricular enhancements focused on spatial and visual
thinking across the University.



*         Provides in-depth reference for GIS as well as other library
reference services.



*         Serve as Library Liaison to the Department of Geography



*         Develop collaborative networks with other internal and external
stakeholders.



*         Provide staff training required to support the GIS effort.



*         Represent the UNT Libraries at consortial and other meetings
concerning geospatial data issues.



*         May supervise student workers and/or Graduate Assistants.



*         Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and
promote the University's and Libraries' commitment to diversity.



*         Serve on Library and University Committees as needed.



*         Be active professionally and contribute to the scholarship in the
field.



Minimum qualifications for the position:



*         ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information sciences
or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline



*         Minimum 2 years customer service experience



*         Demonstrated knowledge of geospatial resources and concepts



*         Experience using GIS software for geospatial analysis and modeling



*         Evidence of leadership, entrepreneurship, and initiative



*         Strong oral and written communication skills



*         Ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage
time wisely, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment



*         Aptitude for thinking creatively and developing products and
services, such as publications, training materials, and workshops



*         Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish
positive and productive collaborations with faculty and staff



Desired qualifications for the position:



*         Degree in a discipline that emphasizes geospatial data such as
geography, earth sciences, or land planning



*         Experience in providing reference services and preparing and
delivering instruction and training



*         Experience with outreach and assessment initiatives



*         Experience with Foundation Center collections and services



*         Experience with Federal Depository Library Program collections and
services



*         Supervisory or project management experience



*         Demonstrated contribution to the profession with scholarly
publications, presentations, and/or through contributions to professional
organizations
