The University of Toledo Libraries are exploring the possibility of
providing GIS services within the main library. This library has a Map
Collection of 140,000 sheet maps, primarily topographic, hydrographic,
geologic, and thematic maps. A small collection of atlases is also
located in the Map Collection. The main library supports, among other
things, the information needs and course offerings of the departments of
Geography & Planning; Economics; Sociology & Anthropology; Earth,
Ecological & Environmental Sciences; Marketing and International
Business; as well as the Urban Affairs Center. I am seeking information
from other libraries that currently provide GIS services, and would be
willing to respond to some questions. You may respond to the entire
group or to me personally. Any personal responses will be summarized
for the List. In any event, please feel free to respond to any of the
following questions:

    * Where does your library offer GIS services: general reference
department, government documents, a map library, or several
      decentralized service points?
    * Do all public services librarians provide GIS services, or is
there a GIS or Map Librarian who alone provides services?
    * Does your library provide funds for staff training in GIS software?
    * Who are your primary users of GIS?
    * Do you advertise your GIS services? If you do, how?
    * Are GIS services provided by appointment only?
    * Are GIS services provided on a fee-based basis? If they are, how
      are fees assessed?
    * How does your library evaluate GIS service needs and the level of
      service?
    * Who provides technical assistance and maintains the computing
      equipment necessary for GIS services?
    * Does your library provide most of the funding to maintain GIS
      services?

Thank you for your assistance.
