Today is Geologic Map Day
http://www.earthsciweek.org/geologicmap/index.html

Dave Soller, USGS, NGMDB, sent this message:

Friday, October 19 is Geologic Map Day, and I hope you're celebrating
appropriately! In the NGMDB project, we'll be celebrating the release
of a redesigned database and Web site -- I invite you to have a look,
and would appreciate any comments! (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov)

Nearly all of our redesign work, which began about two years ago, has
focused on the back-end, to ensure that the infrastructure can support
the new features. The first new pages to be made public are the Map
Catalog and a new map viewer ("MapView"). Geolex, Mapping In Progress,
and other aspects of the NGMDB will be redesigned this Winter.

I draw your attention to our newest feature -- the "MapView" -- this
provides a mosaicked view of published geologic maps of the Nation, as a
new front-end to the NGMDB's Map Catalog. Also, our "Product
Description Pages" now include an improved map image viewer and, for
USGS maps, a suite of image formats for each map; each image has a
"human-readable" filename, and contains useful document metadata.
