Head, Maps And Government Information Department

          POSITION SUMMARY:
               Provides leadership and management of the Syracuse
               University Library Maps and Government Information
               Department (MGI), which provides access, reference, and
               instructional services for research-level U.S.
               depository and cartographic collections. Leads
               department toward new digital initiatives, especially
               GIS. Organizes collections, and plans and supervises
               departmental processing operations. Supervises 1
               librarian and 5 support staff. Reports to Head,
               Research and Information Services Division, which
               includes the MGI, Reference, and Fine Arts Departments.


          DUTIES:
               Plans, implements, and evaluates departmental programs
               and services, including reference and instructional
               services to students, faculty, and other users of U.S.
               and N.Y. State depository, UN and Council of Europe
               publications, cartographic materials, and a map room.

               Proposes and implements a GIS center as part of a major
               Library digital initiative.

               Oversees processing of documents and cartographic
               materials, in conjunction with technical services
               staff.

               Provides group and individual instruction and
               orientation in assigned areas, in coordination with
               User Education Librarian, including the creation of
               departmental information bulletins (print and
               Web-based) and MGI instructional resources.

               Provides reference service, including some evening and
               weekend duty.

               In coordination with other divisional staff, provides
               staff training and development.

               In coordination with other divisional staff, manages
               departmental electronic resources.

               Collaborates with teaching departments to identify
               needs for GIS and digital geospatial data; implements
               and oversees GIS technology and services.

               Serves as liaison to designated academic departments,
               working with faculty, colleagues, and the Associate
               University Librarian for Collection Development to
               develop Library collections in assigned subject areas,
               with responsibility for managing assigned fund codes.

               Works collegially with Public Services division and
               department heads to develop and implement effective
               service delivery.

               Serves on the university librarian's Cabinet, working
               closely with other department heads and administrators
               on long term planning and policy development, and on
               creative solutions to current library/information
               issues.

               Represents the department, Library and University in
               appropriate on- and off-campus settings.

          QUALIFICATIONS:
               Required: Advanced degree from an ALA-accredited
               program; four or more years of experience with
               government publications and/or maps, preferably in a
               research setting; proven success in supervising,
               leading, and evaluating full-time staff; experience
               with electronic resources.

               In addition, the Library seeks to appoint a candidate
               with the best combination of the following
               qualifications:

               Experience with:
                    Cartographic resources;
                    GIS;
                    Collection development;
                    Library user education;
                    Policy formulation and implementation;
                    Computing technologies, including spreadsheets,
                    word processing, html, and file transfer.

               Skills:
                    Effective oral and written communication;
                    Commitment to providing responsive and innovative
                    services to a culturally and racially diverse
                    campus; Ability to work cooperatively in a
                    demanding and rapidly-changing environment;
                    Organizational ability and time management;
                    Leadership, analytical, problem solving and
                    planning ability.

               Education/knowledge:
                    Reading knowledge of European language(s);
                    Second, relevant master's degree;
                    Knowledge of emerging technologies, digital
                    library applications, and networked information
                    resources; Evidence of professional/scholarly
                    activity; Broad understanding of the evolving role
                    of the library in a student-centered research
                    university.

          ENVIRONMENT:
               Syracuse University is an independent Research II
               University founded in 1870 and is a member of the
               Association of American Universities. Its thirteen
               schools and colleges, with 800 faculty, enroll over
               12,000 undergraduate and 5,600 graduate and law
               students. The Library is a member of the Association of
               Research Libraries, the Research Libraries Group, OCLC,
               and other national and regional consortia. Library
               holdings approximate three million volumes. Its online
               system is Endeavor's Voyager. The Library is committed
               to the development of digital resources, and is working
               actively to encompass new digital initiatives. Planning
               is underway for the transformation of space and
               services in a building now housing science and
               technology resources. The Library is also committed to
               excellence in service and to providing responsive
               services to a culturally and racially diverse campus.

               Syracuse is situated in the rolling hills of upstate
               NY, within 250-300 miles of New York City, Boston,
               Philadelphia and Toronto. The University's attractive
               main campus is located just east of downtown Syracuse.
               Cultural opportunities abound, with a symphony
               orchestra, jazz festival, a nationally-recognized art
               museum and an Equity theater, along with excellent
               opportunities for sports and recreation.

          SALARY AND BENEFITS:
               Commensurate with education and experience. Minimum:
               $40,000. The University provides a generous benefits
               package, including TIAA/CREF (11% University
               contribution), health and dental plans, tuition
               remission, adoption assistance, insurance, and other
               work/life options and benefits.
