     The Royal Geographical Society has announced that the E.G.R. Taylor
     lecture for 2000 is to be delivered in London at the Society's House
     on 31 October by J.R. (Jim) Smith, author of the recent biography of
     Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, with
     the title: 'Sir George Everest: The Man behind the Mountain'.  The
     lecture is open to all, and will commence at 6.30 p.m.  Admission to
     the lecture hall is by the Exhibition Road entrance.  Further
     information from The Royal Geographical Society website

     Society at 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR..
