I have been creating a "parallel record" in OCLC as per their instructions as an option to borrowing a non English cataloged record. "Parallel records" are permitted by OCLC. You can go to the "OCLC message of the day" today about this procedure. Further instructions about parallel records are also addressed in the OCLC Bib Formats and Standards manual under Special Cataloging Guidelines, Section 3.10.

Subject: Cataloging question for U.S. Map catalogers

Hi Everyone,

I have a question for U.S. catalogers. When you run into those records
out in OCLC that were created by a German, Dutch, Scandinavian, etc. -
non-English, non-AACR2 library - how do you handle it? Do you edit and
copy catalog or do you start from scratch and create an original?

Thanks.
