Subject: Re: Griffith Morgan Hopkins Information? (fwd)

Elaine:

IIRC, there is some brief biographical material about G.M. Hopkins in Walter Ristow's
magnum opus, AMERICAN MAPS AND MAPMAKERS: COMMERCIAL CARTOGRAPHY IN THE NINETEENTH
CENTURY. Beyond that, I can tell you that Mr. Morgan was born and raised in Haddonfield,
NJ. He continued to live there during his career and commuted to Philadelphia by train
and ferry each day. His name reflects three very old and well-known families of West
Jersey. He was the son of Griffith Morgan Hopkins, Jr., who had married Sarah Clement,
daughter of famed South Jersey surveyor John Clement, in January 1823. No actual birth
date is known to exist for G.M., III, but he was born sometime after 1831. He was the
fifth of nine children born to his parents and remained a single man throughout his life.
I do not have his date of death at hand, but will try to ascertain it. I can tell you
that it appears G.M. died circa 1901, because by 1903, G.M.'s younger brother, Henry W.
Hopkins, had assumed control of the firm.
