Hello!

We have been joined by a new (mature) postgraduate student from Afghanistan
(via the refugee camps in Pakistan), who is hoping to do a project involving
GIS for environmental management /reconstruction in his home country. He / we
would very much appreciate

(a) any leads to people who are working on similar projects, or even anyone
doing any sort of GIS-based work in/on/for Afghanistan;

(b) any suggestions or leads to available topographic and/or thematic mapping.
We have the digital chart of the world, and a number of (mostly very old)
National Geographic maps of Afghanistan, but that is about it! So we need to
greatly improve our coverage, especially at scales larger than 1:1 million.
Where do we start????? :-) If anyone out there has any throwaways that might
be appropriate, we would be DELIGHTED to relieve you of them! :-)

(c) If anyone knows sources of good, cheap/free satellite data for Afghanistan,
this would also be nice. We know of the usual "obvious" sources like the EROS
data centre.

Many thanks in advance

Darius
