For those who would like a ‘state of the art’ overview of Japanese cartography and map libraries, received here yesterday by our Library was a ‘Special issue’ of a Japanese journal (mostly with English summaries). To some extent it compares occidental vs oriental mapping.

Chizu = Map : journal of the Japanese Cartographers’ Association, ISSN 0009-4897 (Tokyo : c/o Japan Map Center), 2005, 43,4, includes the following items. I copy the English-language titles as listed in its ‘Contents’ and romanise (at no expense to yourselves, dear readers) the Japanese title of Ms Suzuki’s contribution only; the English summaries will be found at the end of each contribution:-

Introduction to the Special Issue ‘Present and future of Japanese cartography’ / Takashi MORITA (pp.1-2)

Present and future of the cartography in Base Map Service / Seiichi TANIOKA & Shoichi OKI (pp.3-14)

An approach to the ubiquitous mapping on the sea / Siniti KIKUTI (pp.15-24)

The current and future status of cartography from the viewpoint of Geographic Information Science [sic] / Teruko USUI (pp.25-32)

Chizu shizai-no shūshū, hozon, teikyō = Acquisition, use and preservation of cartographic materials and the map library / Junko SUZUKI (pp.33-41)

Statistical analysis of thematic maps used in human geography in Japan today / Yumio TOMATSURI & Yoshimi MIYAZKI (pp.42-50)

Usages, roles and possibilities of maps in regional studies / Koji KOBAYASHI (pp.51-58)

Past, present and future of cartography in the International cartographic Association / Takashi MORITA (pp.59-72)

Except for Morita’s ‘Introduction’ and Suzuki’s contribution each item has ill., fig., tab., or combinations thereof; similarly each has notes/refs in E and/or in Ja. ‘Famous’ names cited in various contributions include – excluding hydrographic subjects – R. Anson, C. Baruth, C. Board, T. Campbell, C. Fleet, S. Guptill, [G.R.] P. Lawrence, N. Millea, J. Morrison, S. Openshaw, F. Ormeling, M. Peterson, R.B. Parry, C.R. Perkins, W. Ristow, A.H. Robinson, A. Tatham, D. Turnock, & H. Wallis; and BCS (including analysis of The Cartographic Journal), IFLA, & LIBER.

Additionally - and quite normal for regular issues of Chizu - is a folded map in the rear pocket, this currently being ‘Chikei kaiseki-zu (Chugoku, Shikoku chihō)’ credited to ‘GISMAP ®’, 1:500 000, 2 maps each 76 x 57 cm, on sheet 84 x 119 cm. The relevant article (but no summ. In E) is ‘Chikei kaiseki-zu (Chugoku, Shikoku chihō) ni tsuite’ [= About the topographical analysis maps of the Chugoku and Shikoku districts] by Keiichi KATSUBE, Michio SHIRASAWA, & Hiroto AOKI on pp.73-75 (ill.).
