Interesting information from the Library of Congress regarding scanning
their congressional report maps ... as well as update on Brubaker.

Joel--Thanks for the update on this case. At the Library of Congress, we are taking the maps out of the Congressional Serial Set and notating them as to their source. This is being done to protect the maps from thefts, as well as to help to preserve them because they often are printed on poor quality paper. The fact that they are also folded multiple times so that they will fit the size of the volume is what makes them so vulnerable to theft and deterioration. Eventually all of ours will be scanned and put on the web which helps to protect them even more. Pam

"James Brubaker, 74, was sentenced on Monday to 30 months in jail after
being convicted of two felony counts in June -- interstate
transportation of stolen property from Washington to Montana and
possessing stolen property to sell on eBay."

"It's hard for us to know what's been stolen and sold, said Donna
Mahmoud, associate librarian at the University of Lethbridge."

"According to Darlene Warren, librarian for client services at the U of
C, the university "has had to remove materials from the shelves that
wouldn't necessarily fall into the special collections or rare books
policy," as a result of the thefts."
