USGS Position announcement

Director, USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Salary Range: $104,826.00 to $136,273.00

The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS), a bureau of the U.S. Department of
the Interior, invites applications for the position of Director, Earth
Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. Located in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota, the EROS Center is one of the largest centers in the USGS
and carries out the vital mission of informing government leaders,
scientists, and the public about the state of the Earth by means of
satellite and aerial imagery. The EROS Center operates two satellites,
Landsat 5 and Landsat 7, and their worldwide infrastructure of ground
receiving stations. EROS is also the major support center for developing
next generation earth observing satellite systems in cooperation with
NASA and is currently planning to have mission control for Landsat 8 on
site. In addition, EROS is responsible for archiving, interpreting, and
distributing earth observation data from USGS and other agencies and for
conducting scientific research in the areas of global change, land cover
characterization, ecosystem science, and land imaging data and systems
research. The EROS workforce of approximately 700 highly specialized
personnel is composed of approximately 90 government staff complemented
by a larger group of contract employees. The current operating budget of
the Center is approximately $75 million. The EROS Center Director
reports directly to the USGS Associate Director for Geography and works
closely with other USGS leaders to frame and implement appropriate
multi-disciplinary projects for EROS. The EROS Director is responsible
for certifying the overall scientific merit of the Center's programs,
for ensuring that tasks are completed on time and on budget, and for
overseeing consistent application of U.S. government law and policy
regarding ethics, finance, acquisition, contract management, safety,
equal employment opportunity, employee training, and performance
evaluation. The position requires advanced knowledge of government
management principles, space system engineering, information technology,
geography, and remote sensing science. The Director’s leadership, as
reflected in the accomplishments and performance of the EROS Center,
affects national and international land imaging policy and activities,
as well as natural resource management decisions.
