Subject: 4th State GILS conference in Arizona
Sender: Julie Hoff <[log in to unmask]>

Hello everyone -

The Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records is hosting the 4th
GILS (Gov't Information Locator Service) Conference this April in
Scottsdale. To make things more convenient, there will be a state
documents conference at the same location a few days before GILS. So if
you work with state documents (which includes maps, of course!), electronic
or otherwise, the GILS conference is for you.

Regards -

April 24 27, 2002 - Scottsdale, Arizona

The Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records will host the 4th
State GILS Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 24 27, 2002. This
conference will be of interest to anyone whose work involves enhancing
citizen access to government information.

GILS were developed to address the challenges of delivering government
information to customers the public, government employees, and
businesses. GILS programs are now underway in many states. Key aspects of
GILS programs, which use a variety of technologies, are metatagging of
resources, and customized, automated indexing of government web sites.

Program sessions will include an overview of GILS programs, a comparison of
state web portals and GILS, structure and syntax of indexing vocabularies,
preservation of web pages and an overview of search systems and business
models for GILS projects.

Presenters and participants at the 4th State GILS Conference will explore
issues such as commonalities/differences of GILS and state web portals, how
to index and abstract web pages for precise retrieval, the use of
controlled vocabularies, and current and future software for GILS systems.

The registration deadline is Monday, March 25. For additional information
on the conference, including contact and registration, please visit the
conference web site:
