Subject: new LC web site: Places in History

The Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division announces a new web site “Places in History” ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/geogmap/placesinhistory/ ) as a companion site to its existing “Places in the News” web site ( http://www.loc.gov/today/placesinthenews/ ) which offers current geographic information on countries and events in the current headlines.

“Places in History” was created to showcase the Library’s unique historic cartographic collections and allow students, educators, and researchers to view dramatic historic events such as the Civil War in a geographic context in order to gain a better understanding of those events and the unique interplay between history and geography.

Beginning March 4, 2011 until April 20, 2015, the Geography and Map Division will post selected maps from its digitized collections relating to political and economic issues leading up to the Civil War as well as military maps ranging from maps of minor skirmishes to major battles during the week of the 150 th anniversary of those conflicts. Each map is accompanied by text discussing the selected maps, as well as citations and references. The site will be updated weekly during the four year anniversary of the Civil War and a keyword searchable weekly archive ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/geogmap/placesinhistory/archive/2011.html )accompanies the site.

Currently, the major emphasis of this site is the 150 th anniversary of the Civil War, but other historic events may be interspersed along the way.
