Art + Maps: Open now through December 12, 2014 at the Jerry Crail Johnson
Earth Sciences & Map Library.

Works by four local and regional artists are exhibited with items from the
Map Library collection. Corresponding maps range from antique maps to aerial
photographs; celestial charts to contemporary expressions of map design.
Curated by Naomi Heiser.

Mark your calendars for the opening reception on June 19th from
3:00pm-5:00pm in the Earth Sciences & Map Library.

The exhibit features:

. Enhanced remote-sensing images by Karl Mueller, CU-Boulder
Geological Sciences Department

. Quilts by Barbara Olson, Boulder fiber artist

. Paintings by Alan Paine Radebaugh, New Mexico painter

. Pen and watercolor works on paper by Michael Theodore,
CU-Boulder College of Music, Theory and Composition Department

Natural forms and earth processes inform the work of these four artists. The
juxtaposition of art and maps highlights their formal similarities, yet also
reveals elements and functions showing where the purposes of the two formats
diverge. A selection of maps emphasizes artistry in cartographic production
from various time periods and cultures. Several attributes particular to
maps, such as decorative borders, cartouches, and directional signs are
displayed.

Naomi Heiser is the Map Library's lead cataloger and resident historical map
expert. In addition, she has her BA in Art History from Swarthmore College
and her MA in Art Education/Art Therapy from University of New Mexico. She
started in the University Libraries in 1996 and worked in the Government
Documents and Cataloging Departments. Naomi joined the Map Library in 1998;
prior to that she worked at the University of New Mexico Map library from
1992-1996.

During the summer, the Earth Sciences & Map Library is open 8:00am-5:00pm
Monday-Friday.
