Subject: RE: Fwd: depictions of relief over the centuries

Hi Carolyn,
I am familiar w/ the CM manual. I've seen the relief examples in
it. I was just looking for some more in depth history/description
and depictions.
Thanks,
-Silvana

> If you are cataloging pre-twentieth century cartographic resources according to AACR2R, you need to consult Cartographic Materials, A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2, 2nd. ed., 2002 revision. There is a color chart between pages 7-6 and 7-7 of that manual which has pictures of early and modern relief types and what they are called. If you are cataloging on OCLC, you will need to become familiar with what these various reliefs are called which are on this chart in order to code your fixed field for relief correctly. In any case, you would be well served to become familiar with this manual as it is the standard for cataloging instructions for cartographic materials. The Wikipedia article is good, but not useful for the correct terminology to use in a catalog record. If you do not have a print copy of Cartographic Materials, you can access the same information online if your institution subscribes to Catalogers Desktop. You will need your institution's id and password to !
