JOHN KEATES 1925-1999

It is with great regret that we have to inform fellow cartographers of the
sudden death last week of John Keates.

John Keates was one of the world's most respected experts in the field of
cartography. He was awarded the OBE in 1979 by the Queen for his services
to cartography.

Both the British Cartographic Society and The Society of Cartographers owe
much gratitude to John Keates.

John Keates was a leading protagonist in the formation of the British
Cartographic Society in 1963 and the Society of University Cartographers
(now the Society of Cartographers) in 1964.

His funeral takes places at 1.45pm this coming Wednesday at Maule Memorial
Church, Tarfside, Glen Esk, near Edzell, Angus, Scotland, UK.

A full obituary will be published by both Societies in due course.
