Friends,

I'm writing on behalf of a patron. She is seeking information on
the Navy Memorial world map at the Naval Memorial in Washington at
7th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue.

I have never seen the map, but by all accounts, the design and
projection of the map are unusual. It is over 100 feet wide. The
map is centered on Washington DC, is based on an oblique azimuthal
projection centered on Washington, D.C. The range is 240
degrees of latitude. The map model was provided to the Navy by the
Defense Mapping Agency and was constructed in 1987.

The patron would like 1) more information about the history and
design of the map; 2) information about the projection with the
hope of being able to use a GIS package to reproduce the
non-standard map extent/display.

Any known resources regarding this map, or comments from anyone
with experience using a projection of this nature in a GIS package,
will be very welcome.

Thanks --

mike furlough
