Most of the cutter subdivisions in any map classification G^^^2 or G^^^7
are for natural regions, such as rivers, mountains, lakes, islands,
other natural features, and designated areas such as national or state
forests, parks, wilderness areas, and the like.

Especially, there is no natural or clearly defined political boundary.
So you would find a cutter G4362.M326 for Marin Peninsula (in Northern
California) or G4362.M63 for the Mojave Desert (in Southern California).

In my experience, Southern or Northern California, and similar
designations, would be classed either as G4360 or G4361 (depending on
the kind of map) as a portion of the state.

Unless, as Christopher Thirry says, your institution has local practice.

Is it true that there is not a 'Northern California' or a 'Southern
California' region Cutter in table G4362? How can this be?

Or am I missing something obvious?

I realize local subdivisions typically get done locally, but I don't
think it's just map libraries in California that have a lot of northern
and southern California maps.
