Andrew asked earlier about the location of Siegfriedsberg. I replied to him
privately that all I could find was a Siegfriedswalde which was in East
Prussia. While in the map collection yesterday and tried a number of
references, none of which yielded the name sought for. This morning I
spotted again, a clipping from The Computer Paper, August 2000, which I had
meant to post to Carta and Maps-L but which got overlooked.

I typed in the URL http://www.maporama.com and selected Germany,
Siegfriedsberg, and up came a map with a city in the southeast corner and a
circle with cross hairs indicating the location of the searched name just
northwest of the city centre. There were no names on this map. I zoomed
out and it revealed the city to be Sonthofen, due east of the southern tip
of Bodensee at 47* 31' N and 10* 17' E. I expect the name Siegfriedsberg
will show up on the 1:100,000 or larger topographic maps of Germany. I do
hope this is the community Andrew's user was looking for.

I've posted this to the list as I've not seen any mention of Maporama on
Carta or elsewhere and it seems this example shows it to be a powerful tool
for locating places in Europe. It claims to offer online interactive maps
only for Europe and North America including a "driving directions" itinerary
service for most countries including door to door itineraries for most of
Europe.

In all likelihood it's part of Oddens' Bookmarks but I haven't checked there
and may not have thought to use such a site for locating place names.
