The University of Chicago Map Collection has put a group "Chicago
school" thematic maps of Chicago up on the Web at

http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/ssrc

These maps are not very elegant, but I think they make up quite an
interesting portrait of Chicago during the 20s and 30s.

I'd welcome comment, including argument with my claim that these maps
constitute the first thematic atlas of any U.S. city--I could well be
wrong! I'd also be very grateful for any information on the history of the
zipatone-like product that was apparently used to construct these maps (so
far as I can tell the history-of-cartography literature hasn't been very
concerned by zipatone).
