I take the subdivision "Historical geography" to mean that the map shows the
geography of an area in a historical context (mostly border changes).
Consequently, it's not a subdivision I use very often.

The way I understand this (of course I can't remember where I read the
explanation) is that this subdivision is not to be used for maps that show
a place at some time in the past, e.g. a map of California in the 19th
century, but is to be used for maps published to depict some historical
event.  I suppose a map of the United States showing which areas were
claimed by what countries before it became an independent country might be
an example.
