I figured that at least one of the students attended the University of Kentucky rather than Transylvania University since the e-mails were sent from a U of K computer -- indeed at least 3 of them did although it's not clear that any of them were attending classes at the time of the crime.  Apparently they all grew up in Lexington so perhaps that is why they were recognized on the Transylvania campus on the first attempt.

It sounds as though Lipka fits the "jovial" profile of the map thief.

I'm not a librarian though - do you map librarians get these sort of requests (researchers or book collectors wanting to inspect your rare collections)?

Would a grievously misspelled word (such as "first addition") arouse your suspicions?
