The *Society for the History of Discoveries* announces the opening of
registration for its 50^th Annual Meeting to be held October 10 – 13,
2009 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Non-members are welcome to register and
attend the several days of events and meetings. See meeting events,

The SHD meetings are linked to and immediately follow the two-day John
Lawson <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lawson_%28explorer%29>
Tercentenary Symposium and Exhibition in Raleigh. The year 2009 marks
the 300th anniversary of the publication of Lawson’s book, /A New Voyage
to Carolina; Containing the Exact Description and Natural History of
That Country: Together with the Present State Thereof, and a Journal of
a Thousand Miles Travel’d thro’ several Nations of Indians. Giving a
particular Account of Their Customs, Manners &c
<http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/lawson/menu.html>/ (London, 1709). Lawson
traversed the Carolina backcountry in 1700-1701, and eight years later
published his description of the Native Americans and the flora and
fauna of the region. The Lawson Symposium and Exhibition is scheduled
for Friday, October 9 - Saturday, October 10 at the North Carolina
Museum of History <http://ncmuseumofhistory.org/>. Registration for the
Lawson Symposium is done separately from the SHD registration. See the
above website for details.

The *Society for the History of Discoveries* was formed to stimulate
interest in teaching, research, and publishing the history of
geographical exploration. Founded in 1960, the Society includes members
from several academic disciplines as well as archivists, non-affiliated
scholars, and laypersons with an interest in history. The scope of the
Society's activities encompasses the discovery, exploration, and mapping
of the earth's land and sea surface from earliest times to the present -
the explorers and the explored. Fields of specialization thus include
the history of European expansion, cartography, navigation, colonial
settlement, biography, and bibliography. See www.sochistdisc.org
