Most states still issue an official state highway map, but some do not
and do not seem to be in any kind of “trouble” for not doing so. Does
anyone know, without a lot of digging, the initial impetus for states
producing their own official state highway map when there was Rand
McNally and oil companies? Was it a federal law, or other kind of
federal agency or national organization’s “suggestion”? Or did each
state come up with the idea/legislation itself? (I think I found the
original 1921 Illinois law). I’ve been perusing the literature on road
maps but am not finding the conclusive answer.
