Subject: new NGMDB Map Search

Hi -

I am pleased to announce that the NGMDB Map Catalog now includes a
graphical, map search box. At our Quick Search and Comprehensive Search
(http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ngmdb/ngm_catalog.ora.html), this new search box
lets you zoom into the base map and define the search area.

In addition, we've improved the State/County search function and the
Title search, and we've added a counter to the search page which,
on-the-fly, lets you know how many maps will be found according to your
search criteria, without needing to hit the search button to find this
out -- very handy. Last month, that counter was added to Geolex
(http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/geolex_home.html) when we upgraded that
search -- I recommend that you try Geolex in order to see the new search
results page format.

Because this is our initial release of this map search function, we
anticipate making improvements to it in the coming months. In fact, our
entire Map Catalog site is slated for revision later this year, in order
to provide a new set of search pages that recombine the Catalog's search
elements into more useful combinations (and, we'll update our circa-1996
web page design as well!).

I invite you to evaluate this search function, and to send us your
comments via the "comments" button on the search page (or just send
comments to me).

Thank you.

Dave

p.s. I thank NGMDB project members Dennis McMacken, David Percy, Alex
Acosta, Rob Wardwell, and Chuck Mayfield for their fine work.
Software used in this search function includes MapServer, OpenLayers,
KaMap, Ajax, and Oracle...
